The Shetty community in India has been credited for being the pioneers of Restaurant business & developing great eating places at affordable prices. Add to it the fact that Mangalorean cuisine is so good when it comes to cooking seafood. I secretly prayed that my Mangalorean friends invite me for dinner until I discovered Shetty Lunch Home. This means I pray for non important things in life like good health, prosperity etc. now.
Ambiance: This is located behind G Mart in Karama. Very small seating space upstairs, the staircase is also very narrow to walk up & the seating area is also too small. An outdoor seating area for the non summer months. This isn’t definitely a place that you will love for its ambiance, this is literally a Hole in the Wall.
Service: The Waiter was very good in terms of suggesting dishes, getting our orders in time & taking care of repeat orders. Full marks.
In case you have ever tasted Mangalorean food, you will agree there are only a few restaurants in the world that can better this place.
King Fish Rava Fry: What can I say? The Coating was crisp, perfectly flavored & the fish inside was so soft, white flesh perfectly cooked. Easily one of the Best Fried Fish I have had, we ordered a repeat of this. Just Wow!
Chicken Gassi: Smooth, moderately spiced Curry with Tender chicken pieces in it. Combine it with Rice or Neer Dosa or Roti, it is going to please you with its simplicity.
We ordered the Plain rice to go with the Curry & got a bowl of Fish Curry along with it. The Curry was so so good that I already know what I am going to order next time.
Prawns Curry: Prepared with coconut milk & succulent fresh prawns, another Winner dish!
Neer Dosa: They came stacked 4 on top of each other. Each one was light, non sticky & a delight with the mains to have.
Fish Thali: In case you want to have a full set meal with unlimited helpings at rock bottom price, opt for their Lunch Fish Thali. A piece of mackerel fried along with the daily curries, veggies & unlimited helping of everything (except the fried fish).
Prawns Ghee Roast: A tangy sour with a hit of red chilly preparation that can excite the sour taste buds of your palate.
Mutton Pulimunchi: A very sour spicy preparation with well cooked mutton pieces (read ribs/chops).
The complimentary papads, buttermilk etc. are also great. You can ask them for a bowl of curry or a serving of the daily vegetables at absolutely no extra cost.
Pricing: A meal for 2 will be around 80-90 Dhs. It’s a steal, there are pocket friendly restaurants, this one takes it to Pocket BFF level!
Final Verdict: We will definitely go back for the fish & try out the Squid & Crab next time.
Shettys … My Nominee for Best “Hole in the Wall” Restaurant of Dubai.
