When people say South India, they don’t realise that it comprises of 5 states, namely Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu & Kerala. Each state has it’s own cuisine, use of vegetables which is even further divided into sub regional specialties.
Karnataka & more prominently Udupi has exported a lot of chefs across India for opening the Udupi style vegetarian breakfast places. The orange colored lightly sweet Sambar is one of their trademarks. Venus Hamba restaurant in Qusais is the Udupi style restaurant in your own backyard
Ambiance: It has the feel & buzz of a South Indian breakfast joint. Queue of people waiting on a weekend & waiters speeding across delivering orders. The furniture also resembles it. Very uptight tall back wooden chairs that seems a little cramped when its full & waiters are walking around.
Service: Good & Prompt Service.Rarely do they mess up your orders, but corrective action immediately taken.
This serves food reminiscent of the Udupi lunch home style food from Mumbai.
Kesari is our favorite dish here, slightly high on ghee but very yummy. You can get a taste of the semolina based savory Upma too.
Rava idly is an evening speciality. Must Try for the cashews, grated carrot infused Idli.
Veg Cutlets are also good, mashed up veggies which are then rolled & shallow fried. Many times get stocked out fast.
Idlis & medu Vadas are good. Rule 1: Always dunk your wada in the Sambar for the best taste.
Bisibelle Bhath is a Sambar rice dish topped with crunchy boondi. Love the taste here.
Dosas are good but are always little more on the oil quotient, the Banana leaf below it shows it.
If you can’t decide what to have for breakfast, Keep Calm & order the Mini Tiffin. have a bite of everything
The various Chutneys & Sambar are really good, especially the garlic chutney.
Chole Bhatura: Chhole are decent, Bhaturas are huge but very oily.
No meal should ever finish without the strong coffee flavored brewed Filter Coffee.
Pricing: Friendly on the pocket. Breakfast for 2 would be in 35- 40 Dhs range.
