Buffet v/s a la carte is a strenuous choice when it comes to picking a restaurant. Quantity v/s quality, Spread Choice v/s ordering your own choice, Walking around refilling your plate v/s being served on the table. AB’s Absolute Barbecue has managed to wonderfully amalgamate the Best of both worlds. For more than 1 & a half years, it has been one place which has delivered consistently on all fronts … food, flavour, novelty, service & value for money. The only hitch for us was that their restaurant was across the town near Media City & post dining there, driving would be a challenge in itself.
ABs finally managed to remove that hitch & opened doors to its second branch near Deira City Centre about 3 weeks back. We were invited for a special preview of the restaurant before the launch & weighed by a burden of expectations, we reached there. Now, branching out of popular restaurants has its own issues, will the Service match up? Is the flavour identical to the Original one? A new branch always starts on a lower footing & has to do that much hard to earn the respect of the original one, it’s pretty much like the younger sibling of a high performer elder one.
They have a 2-step reservation system in case you are walk-ins & don’t have reservations. You get your number on the ground floor & will receive an SMS once your table is ready. We were greeted by Rahul Chowdhury & shown around the place. Spread out with a seating capacity of more than 80-90 people, it spaces out the tables so that seating & more importantly on the table service becomes easier.
The waiting staff with some familiar faces & the Table in charge Wahab with Chef Byomkesh took care of the entire evening & left us happy with the entire service.
Coming to the concept of ABs, it has a DIY Live Grill on your table where you can grill from the choice of appetizers,
Also they serve you some of the Starters, plus a Mongolian Wish Grill & a buffet spread of Mains & Desserts including a Cold Stone Creamery. Phew!
My pick from the Starters was definitely the Lawrence Road Chaap Masala which was a well cooked mighty Mutton Chop served with a dressing of the right spices.
ABs signature Churrasco Pineapple is that “I always return back for this” dish with caramel cinnamon glazed pineapple grilled with the sweet, sour & slightly burnt flavours creating a Wow experience in itself.
The crunchy Crispy Corn, Cheesy Potatoes, Paneer Tikka & soft yet flavorful Brazilian Bbq Chicken were my other picks from the lot.
And then came the Grilled Tandoori Crab, delight for Crab lovers with the pairing of Indian spices, tandoor & soft crab meat.
The Indian Tadka mocktail with the Green apple, chaat masala & coriander leaves is a Must Have for anyone having affinity for Indian Jaljeera/ Banta flavours. Recommended!
The Jalapeno & Chilly spiced Mocktail came a distant second to the Indian Tadka.
A trip to the Wish Grill is mandatory if you still want to create something of your own where you can choose from exotic meats (Duck/Octopus/ Quail etc.) pairing up with veggies & the sauces (Pesto/ ABs Dancing Sauce/ Tufani Indian etc.) on a Mongolian Wish Grill & delivered on your table.
We opted for the Squid & Crab Meat in the ABs Sauce & Duck with Tufani Indian, both tasted wonderful.
The Mains with the large spread of Curries/ Salads/Pastas & Biryanis can be a stand alone buffet meal in itself.
Very difficult to do justice once the Starters are done because you are eyeing the Desserts too.
The Chicken Biryani – flavorful, Dum Aloo – spiced up & the Abs Special Black Dal – Creamy were the only ones we could dig in to.before we headed to the desserts.
The Shahi Tukda was as usual to die for with the soft fried bread soaked in creamy rabdi.
However, the star for me was the Fried Ice Cream coated with coconut & flavour, deep fried to crispy golden perfection which once broken in to oozes the cold ice cream. Wonderful!
The Dessert Counter offers many other options like the Gulab Jamun, Pastries & fresh fruits.
The Cold Stone Creamery make your own ice cream is a treat for kids.
Priced at approx 60 – 85 Dhs per person, it is absolute Value for Money for the kind of flavours & choice on your plate.
Final Verdict: ABsolutely Recommended for a multi choice Indian Buffet experience. Now that it’s closer to home, It will become a frequented destination.
